Ernie's Loved Dog Sweater
Yarn = 300 yards of a Worsted Weight
Needles = Size 8 US/ 6 mm
Gauge = 4 stitches per inch in stockinette
Cast on 84 stitches with size 8 US/6mm
Join in the round, being careful not to twist.
Knit in K2P2 ribbing for 2 inches.
Pattern Rounds:
Round 1 = K2P2 for 20 stitches, K2 P1, place marker, K2P2 for 12 stitches, K 12 stitches, P2K2 for 12 stitches, place marker, P1 K2, P2K2 for 20 stitches, P2
Round 2 = Same as Round 1
Round 3 = K2P2 for 20 stitches, K2 P1, C2B P2 for 12 stitches, K12 stitches, P2 C2B for 12 stitches, P1 K2, P2K2 for 20 stitches, P2
Continue Rounds 1-3 until the piece measure to the back of the dog's front legs
(8 inches)
On the last round, 12 stitches before round marker start knitting with a new needle. Continue with new needle until you have 12 stitches after marker. (total of 24 stitches on new needle)
With original needle, cast off 4 stitches, work to last 4 stitches on original needle, cast off last 4 stitches.
Work back and forth flat for 1 inch, remember to continue pattern with cables. Cut yarn.
Now begin knitting with new needle in pattern for 1 inch.
Join front and back onto 1 needle making sure to cast on 4 stitches over the leg holes.
Knit to dog's neck in plain K2P2 ribbing.
Next round = K2togP2tog to end of round.
Knit K1P1 ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off loosely
Legs:
Pick 20 stitches around leg hole. Knit in K2P2 ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off Loosely.
C2B = K the 2nd stitch on the left needle without slipping off, then K the 1st stitch and slip both off
Make it your own = The 12 stitch stockinette portion in the middle of the body section would be a great place for you to add your own spin on the coat with more cables, lace, or purl design, etc.
Sounds OK. Wondering if my cat would wear it, not!

I have a Biewer Terrier (smaller yorkie) that weights about ten pounds. Would this sweater work for her if I dropped down a needle size? I'd love to knit her a sweater.
